Just found Justin Vinesky's work. He says he "makes photographs of the simple, quiet times in life; taking the ordinary and making it something more, something for the keeping." I think this is very nondescript. His work is a lot more specific than that. Maybe he just doesn't want to tell us.

I found him through a link to a print he had for sale on "collect dot give" which is "a place to collect contemporary photography and donate to worthy causes at the same time." The photographer makes a limited edition run of prints that are sold through the website, and all of the profits are donated to a cause of their choice. Pretty awesome!

Brad Westcott interview

Overall I think it went pretty well. There was a good turn out and I had some great conversations about the work with people. Putting together the show was a challenge that taught me a lot. I'm very excited about group shows I have planned with other past graduates this spring/summer and future exhibitions as well creating new bodies of work. I expect 2012 to be a great year of exploratory growth for me in developing my work and finding my own voice as an artist.

this is very brief.

mike's talk was about designing for the user. he showed lots of examples from industrial design of products that were designed for their specific users. he talked about how we can think about this as graphic designers. i liked what he was saying about gathering research of the user groups, my favorite thing being his strategy of taking malleable prototypes out into the real world to get immediate feedback. you keep the product in a malleable state so that you can constantly make changes and ask, "what about something like this?"

This is my first attempt at the poster. At this point I am using all vector imagery. I'm attemping to visualize his music with the colorful shapes being emitted from his trumpet.

Then I used watercolor to give it texture and also more of a handmade feel.

Jamie commented that the shapes should be the main focus of the poster and that at this point they were secondary to the typography and also the figure, so I needed to add more shapes.

This is my first attempt with a watercolor figure. We decided that this was the way to go, but that a watercolor background behind the water color images was a bit too much, so after this I went back to the vector background.

This is my first print out for our final critique. I abandoned the color background in favor of something more neutral. The class did not like this though so after critique I switched back to pursuing the color. This is a new watercolor of the figure. I like 'unfinished' drawings/paintings, so that's how I decided to render this. My decision making for only painting his skin was that it established a relationship between himself and my visual representation of the music. I was hoping that people would read that he was entering the trumpet as his physical self and exiting the trumpet as his musical expression. The advertising guy from the Folly also commented that he thought my rough pencil rendering alluded to the improvisational aspects of jazz as well.

This is the poster that was shown to the Folly people. There were more shapes added into this one.

They thought that the rough graphite looked unfinished. Jamie had some suggestions about possible new ways to render the figure. The first I tried was to knock out everything except the painting with a white vector shape.

I tried a lot of different background colors to try and get one that I liked.

Then I finished the watercolor and also did a ink line drawing that I superimposed over the painting digitally. Below is the new artwork.

This is the newest poster with the new artwork and with some clean-up work done to the shapes. I also went back to the gradient background.

Throughout the process I pretty much used allegory the whole time in my attempts to represent his music with the colorful shapes. I was inspired by his Cuban heritage and how that was a tremendous influence on his music. When I thought the Latin aesthetic I thought of a lot of floral imagery and rich patterns. That is how I started making the abstract shapes emitting from his trumpet. I also used the image I did of him to base the water color off of because he is wearing a hat that is distinctly Cuban.

Well, my first product is a box of Fruity Pebbles. It is utilizing pathos. It implements bright colors, bold all-caps typography, cartoon characters to trigger a positive emotional reaction. Also, everything is set up on diagonals or curves to make it dynamic and exciting. On the back of the box there are games to play and the cartoon characters look like they're having a grand ol' time.

My next product is Naked. It is a juice/smoothie product that prides itself in being a very healthy drink with no additives and made from real fruit. It attempts to appeal to a customer through logos. The packaging is covered with information about why this juice is better than other juice. The imagery is also using logos in that it shows the fruit that is used to make this particular juice.

Lastly, I have Shatto milk. This company uses ethos to draw in customers. They pride themselves on getting their milk from local farmers and that their milk doesn't contain any extra hormones. People concerned with pollution would want to buy this milk because it isn't transported over great distances, therefore appealing to their ethical stance. Also, the bottles are reused, therefore not contributing unnecessarily to landfills. The design and typography is very simple, like their product.

"decorative elements enhance communication with graphic resonance"

Meggs talks about the importance of style and it's relevance to the corresponding period in time. She talks about the movement in the 1920's to achieve an objective stance with design, following the philosophy that, "form follows function." More recently, in the late twentieth century, Meggs comments on how, "for the first time" graphic designers are able to fully understand the history of graphic arts and draw from all these different resources. She references an AIGA book cover designed by Dugald Stermer that draws from a 500 year old publication as inspiration.

I wonder what Dugald Stermer's book cover says about our society today.

Aristotle's Appeals

afsf ssss Essentially, the reading covers what we talked about in class. ethos is the attempt to make the speaker appear credible. ethos - "to project an impression to the reader that you are someone worth listening to" uh oh. Pathos is to create an emotional connection between what you're talking about and the audience. "emotional appeal can effectively be used to enhance an argument." Logos is the attempt to appeal to a person's logic. This means using reason and information to sway a person to take your opinion.

Project 3 statement

I'm not sure if it was because I had been the one doing the interviews and am involved with the project, but I felt that having someone voice these points made them more real and impactful. I think that voice communicates on a different level than text or perhaps even image because it seems to be a bit more personal. The information seems more real and important.

I tried to direct the narrative by directing the interviews, then when assembling the audio afterwards i kept what they said in the order they said it. It was interesting seeing the way that the audio lined up when put together, but I would like to have played more with rearranging and editing the interviews after the fact.

It was making me think of what liberties I had to manipulate was someone else was saying. I suppose for this project it doesn't matter too much, but in something that was going to be published in some form I'd have to be careful.

A narrative was sort of created by the order of questioning. They began talking about initial responses to the product and then eventually got to more specific things, like opinions about content of the product. So, I kind of feel like someone could listen to this and maybe get an idea of what they were talking about because they start out broadly and then get more narrow. There needs to be more defining information though I think.

from Understanding Comics

This reading covered ideas of faith and closure and went over different ways of transitioning. I really liked this format because you were able to read and simultaneously see a clearly drawn example. The listing off of different methods for creating narrative was very good:

Moment-to-Moment - this is showing a detailed view of a subject without using much movement. This does not leave much up to the reader.

Action-to-Action - this is the develop of quick jerks following action to action to action progression.

Scene-to-Scene - where the narrative is carried along by cuts from one scene to another. This manipulated space and time.

Aspect-to-Aspect - wonders around a scene showing different places. "wondering eye"

Non-Sequitor - these have no relationship to each other.

This makes me think about the cuts I'd be making and what sort of imagery. This of course can also have relevance to sound as well. Action-to-Action is very obviously usable for work with my subject matter, but one's like subject-to-subject, aspect-to-aspect, and non-sequitor could give me some interesting results.

Two ex-students from KCAI are on a trip from Kansas City to New Orleans with their only means of transport being bicycle and canoe(mostly canoe). The rig they have is awesome. The trailer is made out an old futon frame and the paddles conveniently fit into the back of the bike seat and are fastened to the canoe with old bike tubes.

The canoe in the water with bikes, trailer and all.

They're making some very thoughtful observations on their blog about the trip and are having a lot of wonderful discoveries and encounters. Bikes and canoes all the way down to the Gulf... sounds like a dream.

Also, I need to tread carefully when talking about Cuba and the United States because of our issues.

I talked to Karen about my thumbnails also. She really thought his Cuban roots needed to be used in the poster. We talked about the use of flowers and colors. I thought perhaps using antithesis to show the contrasts between his American and Cuban influences.

We also talked about the role communism played in his life and his eventual flight to the United States. Karen brought up the piece of the Native American with the American Flag juxtaposed over him and acting as prison bars. I think this is a good idea and reference, but it's probably moving too far away from the music. This is just a poster for a show, not for a documentary of his life or anything.

Need to do more thumbnails and think of "rendering techniques." Gonna some stuff with water colors and stickers for sure. maybe stencils.

Find-n-Share vislang

Milton Glaser's "I Love New York" campaign creates a pun when he replaces the word "love" with a heart symbol. I think this is effective because it gives the viewer a simple little joke to figure out that brings them into the design a bit. Also, the heart is a personal and relatable symbol for people. This also brings people into the design more. This image was just picked off of google image search.

Next I have a pair of rain boots that have a markings imitating a rain gauge on the sides. This is an example of irony because the boots are meant to keep rain water out, yet they are imitating a rain gauge which is supposed to collect rain water. This creates a clever and entertaining product. Found at www.swiss-miss.com

The reading online was pretty interesting I though while the second one was more of a summary of what we covered in class... here's my thoughts with more specifics.

"Visual/Verbal Rhetoric" by Gui Bonsiepe

"The aim of rhetoric is primarily to shape opinions, to determine the attitude of different other people, or to influence their actions." Thinking of rhetoric in this way it is very obviously the value for graphic design. Gui explains that rhetoric made it's way into advertising because of competitive market places. Merchants needed a way to make their product more attractive because it did not stand out against it's competition by itself.

I was a bit bothered when he begins to quantify rhetorical devices to determine the persuasiveness of something. In his example he appears to saw that you can figure out the "ratio of rhetorical figures to normal sentences in advertising copy..." to determine it's persuasiveness. It seems to me that this creates a system where rhetorical devices are more important that factual devices. So much so, that it would be desirable to have a higher ratio of rhetorical figures than to have honest advertising. It does seem that that has always been the case with advertising though. He says, "...advertising is addressed information, and that its informative content is often secondary if it plays any role at all." This is a scary yet true statement. Who's responsibility should it be to make sure products are being advertised honestly if actual information about the product plays little to no role?

Earlier in the text he writes that "'Pure' information exists for the designer only in arid abstraction." And also, that "the only examples of simple, dehydrated information, innocent of all taint of rhetoric... are such things as logarithm tables, timetables, and telephone books." While I do not like the idea of design being wiped clean of all expressive qualities or rhetorical devices I do have an attraction to the unbiased and objective presentation of a telephone book.

The last sentence of the reading states that, "the signs no longer simply add up, but rather operate in cumulative reciprocal relations." There has to be a responsible combination of the persuasive and objective.

Milton Glaser(cool dude) - "Good design is good citizenship"

"Language as a model for graphic design"

I found this reading to be mostly a restating of the lecture we had in class. I would like to point out the Israeli poster "Independence Day" as a gross abuse of the power design has. The poster presents Israelis with the delusional idea that there is a "peaceful coexistence of the two peoples." The intertwining of the flags resembles a hand shake, insinuating that the two countries are now friends. This is obviously far from the facts and is a irresponsible piece of propaganda. As the text states, the Palestinians observe the day as the "Day of Disaster."

I was interested in the writing at the end of the article about using these tools responsibly. "Symbols are at liberty to be a little irresponsible and experimental. This potent latitude can be used to entertain and enrich or it can become deceptive and misleading." "... graphic designers have an ethical responsibility to the audience and should not knowingly create or manipulate signs and symbols to falsely distort." All of the tools utilized by graphic designers can be used irresponsibly, but these rhetorical devices seem to be the most dangerous because the reason rhetorical devices were developed was to give the debater an advantage aside from the objective evidence. I was glad this text emphasized responsibility.

My group is the Arturo Sandoval Quartet although the Arturo is really the star.

Arturo Sandoval was born November 6, 1949 just outside of Havana Cuba. He began playing the trumpet at age 12, focusing on classical music, but soon began pursuing jazz. In 1964, he began three years of serious classical trumpet studies at the Cuban National School of Arts. By the age of 16 he had earned a place in Cuba's all-star national band. In 1971 he was drafted into the Military but luckily was able to play in the band. His long time hero Dizzy Gillespie became his friend and mentor. They worked together and performed together. Arturo helped form the group Irakere, his first international success. Irakere rose to success very quickly and signed with Columbia Records. They were nominated for Grammys twice and won one before the group disbanded.

While on tour through Spain with Dizzy Gillespie in 1990 Arturo defected to the United States. He moved to Miami, FL where he still lives with his family. The same year he received a job teaching at Florida International University. He eventually became a naturalized citizen in 1999.

In 1998 HBO/Warner Brothers acquired the rights to Arturo's life story to make a motion picture about him. In 2000 the movie was released. The film was nominated for 2 Golden Globes and 4 Emmy's. Arturo won the Emmy for Outstanding Music
Compositions for a Miniseries, Movie, or Special.

He has played with such stars as Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Alicia Keys, Tony Bennet, Patty LaBelle, and Justin Timberlake.

Currently Arturo teaches, still at the Florida International University. He also puts on clinics and teaches outside of the school. He has an educational book and cd series that continues to be one of the most successful in the industry.

For my topic I'm picking a project that I started at the end of last semester. A friend and I started a skate zine called Landscrape. It covers the local skateboard scene by way of interviews, coverage of events, photo documentation, and miscellaneous articles of interest.

My secondary goal with the project is to promote art and creation to skateboarders. The skateboarding community has always been very creative, but in my opinion the Kansas City skate scene is not very art conscious. This would be done through coverage of art events and interviews/features with artists. The event/artist would normally be skate related. I'm particularly interested in individuals who were good skateboarders and are now primarily artists.

At this point very little branding has been done. The work that I had been doing was cut short with the end of school year and traveling which took up most of the semester. At this point the first issue has been out for a couple months, the second issue is nearing a print-ready state, and content in beginning to be gathered for the fourth issue. Runs are 250 copies at this point. So far, the distribution has only been in Kansas City metro area and Wichita, KS. Second and future issues should be in Lawrence and Topeka as well.

Free publication

I think working with narrative, especially with motion, will be very good for this. For one, I am getting very interested in video/motion and video is something that skateboarders are very familiar/comfortable with watching. Hopefully some sort of web interface can be developed.

Excited to work on this.

Wolfgang Weingart Poster: Final Statement

For this Weingart poster I started being pretty inspired by how Weingart used images to break up the plane, create depth, and frame elements of his poster.

This is one of the things I came up with while moving in that direction.

This was my initial idea and I still had time to think about other ways to make the poster. I started working with these simpler photographic compositions and working with bold text.

I was also excited about Weingart's early typographic experiments and wanted to try to implement those.

After that I tried combining the two directions I had going and pushed the play with typography further, trying to sort of create my own style with it.

I enjoyed working with photographic images in a new way as well as working with the type. I like combining the type and image to create depth and unify the two elements. I especially want to work with photographs in this manner and want to use photograph as graphic more often instead of vector imagery.

Museum Exhibit: Final Statement

I had a really hard time staying consistently interested in this project all semester. I understood what we were being taught, but I didn't feel like there was any part of what I was working with that I want interested in or that I could really get motivated about. Now, applying principles that I learned this semester in graphic systems to outside projects I am interested in I am having a much better time and am wanting to really make a good product in the time that I have to do it.

Moving on to my Museum Exhibit.

I decided on the theme of Then&Now, an exhibit of old to new medical tools. I used a juxtaposition of photographs of old medical tools and contrasted them with my icon set of modern medical tools.

So, starting out with this assignment Julie and I really wanted to work with motion first of all. After that the rest kind of developed from there. I'm going to kind of relate the DVD menu to a potential full film, so that our packaging and poster are playing off the information in the actual film. We thought about the sequencing of information from different formats being experienced through time, and I thought that was pretty important. Important to my developing interests, but also just in general to graphic design.

So, we decided to introduce the viewer to the product with the most dramatic and intriguing image/sequence. We also thought the element of time and also the idea of changing states was important to show.

Here is the Poster:

On the DVD case we decided to start off with repeating the same imagery as the poster on the front and introduce other state changes on the back and inside. The outside images had to do with the state change in progress and the inside demonstrated the completed state change. Also, when the DVD is removed it reveals an image behind which illustrates the change.

Last, here is the DVD menu. We started off wanting to illustrate the climate changes that would happen in a bit more subtle says. So, for instance, instead of the very dramatic imagery they had in the video of glaciers melting and disappearing, we simply had an ice cube melting. We tried to carry that aesthetic through the rest of the scenes.

As documented through the entirety of art history, humans have never accepted a realistic depiction of the human figure. The very first documented piece of human creation is an idealization of the female figure, Woman of Willendorf, with her emphasized breasts and hips. Egyptions became obsessed with ideal proportions and had a specific set of rules for how to depict the human body. Not until the Greeks did any civilization strive towards strict reality. If I remember correctly, the Riace Bronzes are considered the Greek's most perfect representation of the human figure, and, once again, if I remember correctly, the Greeks became quickly bored with accurately representing the human figure and went back to exaggerating important features. It is how we have always and possibly will always depict the human figure. I don't know for certain if it's natural for us to idealize ourselves, but we do have a very consistent track record of doing it. I think that the problem lies not within our idealization, but with our almost complete faith in photography as a depiction of reality.

Instead of thinking of photography as simply another medium for creating images we have allowed ourselves to develop a blind faith in the deceptive god that is photography. Photography has, of course, never been a true representation of reality. It is really more like an enhanced reality, allowing us to view things in ways that we would never be able to within the limitations of our physical selves. In that sense, every photograph, even a completely straight photograph, is an idealization, regardless of subject matter. Photography also has a long history of manipulation since its conception. The manipulation of photo based images had been going on since the mid 19th century and has never exactly been a secret. Nothing about a photo shoot is real; from the make-up, to the lighting, and even things as minimal as how the camera is focused and the f-stop used. Then, with the integration of the computer and digital media it is a wonder that anyone could accept any photograph as a depiction of reality. John Everard is quoted in the writing talking about this, "There seems little doubt that the old fallacy that the camera cannot lie greatly strengthens it's appeal… It can emphasize qualities of delicacy, elegance of line, mystery and glamour and yet retain the persistent atmosphere of reality."

This faith in the photograph as a truth teller results in the problems as described by Lanie Kazan.

Alternately, I think that this is also part of the problem that photography has with it's placement in the fine arts. Because of the trust people give to the photograph and the assumption that what they're seeing is reality it cannot be fully accepted as what it really is, just another medium for the creation of image.

EDIT: The reason our idealizations do not look like the Woman of Willendorf today is because those characteristics are not important to survival anymore. What is important is becoming successful in society and being able to support oneself. Society has not allowed women to build careers for themselves until relatively recently, thus resulting in a dependency on the male. How do you capture a male? Physical attractiveness. Being sexually attractive sets off EMOTIONAL TRIGGERS, resulting in a positive reaction.

EMOTIONAL TRIGGERS, just like we trigger with our design work. Is the work we create so different than the photo-chopped cover image of angelina jolie? DESIGN TO SELL!

Females have been utilizing a form of design for survival far before "commercial art" was conceived.

Here are my first sketches and ideas. At this point I had started thinking about using some sort of concealing element with hidden information under it. I have different ideas present, including the original concept that I end up going with.

Here is my first mock up of this project. I was working with the idea of placing the icon into a scene, which is hidden. Then, upon taking off the jacket you can see what is going on. The pill bottle book revealed a good scene and showed more going on, but I couldn't think of feasible things to shoot for the others so I began working with found images and collaging.

I then began collaging images together for my inside covers. I liked how I could create a much more intense scene than I could have with a straight photograph. I also just really liked the feel of the collaged images. They are fairly chaotic and I like the contrast it creates between the inside and outside covers. I also was finalizing the placement of the typography and began putting most of the information exclusively on the inside flap of the jacket.

I liked this project a lot because I was able to work with separate parts that had meaning on their own and then when put together interacted with each other to create different or new meaning. Tyler said early on in this project that people are going to potentially spend a lot of time with these books and that gives us, as the designer, a unique opportunity to really bury meaning in the imagery that can be understood by the viewer later in time. This can just be a result of the time spent with the book which would lead to further investigation of the cover or there can be elements in the cover that the reader will only be able to understand after discovering things within the text of the book. I think this kind of differentiates this project with almost everything else we've done this year and gives us the opportunity to make our designs more sophisticated or complex. I think that my book covers begin to explore this idea and my future work can hopefully use this idea in very unique ways.

When we started this project I tried to think of books that I have or have seen that are different and unique. This could be as simple as a band of paper that wraps around the book, acting as a partial jacket, or as neat as Dave Egger's The Wild Things which is covered in faux fur. I really liked the partial jacket idea and the potential for the revealing of new and possibly surprising information with it's removal. So, I began thinking about concealing info. I began using a window in my dust jacket to reveal a hint of the imagery beneath to the viewer.

Then the dialogue started to happen about how much or how little information to give away through the window and how much info was appropriate on the cover/inside. I thought of a book I had recently been reading and my interaction with it. I had spent some time with this book before taking off it's jacket, revealing a highly saturated and explosive image and contrasted the jacket of the book. I loved being surprised by this new discovery. After thinking about this I thought that maybe the jacket should have absolutely no hint at what was under it and that the viewer may or may not ever discover it. I decided to leave the hint in there, as I didn't want to risk the chance of the viewer not discovering it, but I did embrace the idea of the contrast between the inside and outside covers and it also lead me towards making the hint fairly subtle.

That essentially led me to my final covers. I have a very plain cover that contrasts greatly with the inside image, a small hint of the inside cover image, and an interaction by the two covers that evolves with time(when the reader removes the jacket). I like this idea of time and also that the view can investigate and be rewarded with a further understanding.

So, today we had our crit for our magazine layouts with infographics... I've got a lot of work to do(more than I even realized) to get them somewhere acceptable. I need to create a better system with my layout to navigate the individual articles. At this point there are certain jumps in the text that do not make sense and are hard to follow. I need to implement my icon colors, which also need to be revised, into my typography. Right now it is just "a sea of black" and I could be using the colors to emphasize the hierarchies that have already started and to point out other points of importance that are not yet being highlighted. Infographs need tweaks and there needs to be a greater attention to detail (page numbers, indentions, etc.)

Then, after picking those three I began to work with them digitally.

I followed my paper prototypes fairly closely and created digital versions of them.

This map is the first infographic and it is illustrating growth in drug overdoses. At first I attempted this by just placing the pill icons wherever I thought appropriate visually, but that became a little too chaotic and I implemented a system where one pill per square inch would be equivalent to a 100% increase. I showed percentages under 100 by just using that much of a pill. Jamie thought that didn't look right, and she suggested having the pill be filled with the percentage. So, the full red pills are equivalent to a 100% growth and the not completely filled pills correlate with the actual percentage, as implemented below. Then I took into consideration matching line weights and creating a clear key to explain how to read the data and what it is about.

I initially explored expressing time in different ways like time lines, bar graphs, and pie charts. I decided to use this time line that is being created by a heart monitor line because of it's visual qualities and references. There were a few varieties of organizations of the info and visual elements of this and took small adjustments.

This graphic was used to show times of ambulances arrivals and the percentages in which they would actually arrive in those times. The times are displayed prominently and reinforced by the pie chard. Then, additional text is delivered in the captions of the info graphics.

Magazine Layouts for Crit

We began this project by finding a magazine article that we liked and then identifying the grid structure that it was using. This exercise helped me a lot. I found out that I liked varying column sizes and varying type sizes. I like having the grid be sort of obscured and hidden by irregularities, so that it really took some investigation to figure out what was going on. I don't think many if any of the things I just said are present effectively in my grid, but they are things that I noticed.

First, after looking at some ambulance and hospital images I kept seeing Clarendon pop up and decided that I wanted to use it prominently in my spreads. I used different column widths and type faces/sizes to differentiate between the two articles that were present in the feature. The size of the articles became a challenge in fitting them in together in a way that I liked, and the implementation of our infographics gave us another visual element to work in effectively. I like in my spreads how the opening spread is very calm and without too much distraction. It allows the bold title to really grab hold of the viewer and then they're able to examine the infograph which really, displays the most dramatic information out of the three. Then they can move into the articles. The second spread introduces both articles, but still has a decent part made up o imagery. This third spread is very text heavy which should be ok if the viewer has been interested enough to read the article that far.

I found this infographic and I like it a lot. I don't understand any of the text, but it still communicates. The first level of understanding is that it is about capital because of the large symbol for money. I then notice the playing fields and I begin to attempt to figure out what kind of connection they're trying to make between each of these sports and the money symbol. I then notice the numbers and how they're organized from the greatest on top to the lowest on the bottom. They're not organizing numbers(1-2-3), so it's obvious that there's a direct connection between the number and that individual sport. It must be that tennis makes 19x dollars and is the highest grossing, basketball makes 12x dollars, and hockey makes 6x dollars a year and is the third highest grossing sport. I really like the way this infographic is able to stand without any text. I also really like how the two pieces of content combine to create a single illustration. And the vertical bars becoming lights for the tennis court is a nice extra touch. Very successful.

When these more specific drugs were tabulated, we found that street drugs were not behind the increase. The increase from 1999 to 2004 was driven largely by opioid analgesics, with a smaller contribution from cocaine, and essentially no contribution from heroin. The number of deaths in the narcotics category that involved prescription opioid analgesics increased from 2,900 in 1999 to at least 7,500 in 2004, an increase of 160% in just 5 years.[1] By 2004, opioid painkiller deaths numbered more than the total of deaths involving heroin and cocaine in this category.

With the latest, 2005 death data, we were able to drill down even further and look at the specific drugs causing the deaths. For deaths with multiple drugs involved, we looked at only the first-listed drug, which is a method to assign responsibility when multiple drugs are involved. This analysis showed that opioid painkillers were still the most commonly found drugs, accounting for 38.2% of the first-listed drugs, with methadone by itself contributing to almost half of these deaths. Benzodiazepine sedatives such as Valium® and antidepressants accounted for 6.5%. Even without including the category of “other specified drugs,” which are mostly prescription, the total of prescription opioids, benzodiazepines, and antidepressants (about 45%), exceeds the total of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamines/amphetamines (about 39%)."

"(2000) "Illicit drug use is associated with suicide, homicide, motor-vehicle injury, HIV infection, pneumonia, violence, mental illness, and hepatitis. An estimated 3 million individuals in the United States have serious drug problems. Several studies have reported an undercount of the number of deaths attributed to drugs by vital statistics; however, improved medical treatments have reduced mortality from many diseases associated with illicit drug use. In keeping with the report by McGinnis and Foege, we included deaths caused indirectly by illicit drug use in this category. We used attributable fractions to compute the number of deaths due to illicit drug use. Overall, we estimate that illicit drug use resulted in approximately 17000 deaths in 2000, a reduction of 3000 deaths from the 1990 report."

Icons: Reflection

I'm glad to be 'done' with these icons but I know that they have a ton of work to be done on them. At this point I am mildly happy with them. At the end of the black and white development process I had two icons that were not communicating and so we decided that they should be thrown out and an older icon, the scrubs, should be reintroduced to the set. After some work the scrubs are starting to work but still lack cohesion with the other icons. I think this is because they have much more open white space than other icons.

I made pretty big changes in deciding that the icons needed to move more towards a more square format, like the ambulance. In doing this I think that the icon set has become a bit more cohesive.

When color was introduced I liked the possibilities that opened up, but I do not think that I have come to a good solution for my color icons yet. I am having trouble making the colors communicate the theme of the story. There are also issues of making the icon outline work well. This far it is not really adding anything to the icon.

Typography II: Project 2

Today we had our final crit for our second project in type. The project was to design a weather campaign for a news channel(I chose CNN).

We started off doing type experiments with four words that we chose. I chose drought, cloud, rain, and storm.

It was important in this project to keep the images easily legible because they are only able to be read for a very short period of time. It is also important that the emotional impact of the imagery matches the content of the billboard/bus. If the imagery can also make a strong impact emotionally it will be much more effective in the short time of exposure and less text dependent. It was pretty difficult keeping the text legible while expressing the word. I especially had a hard time with the storm composition, and it still needs some work. On my compositions I set up a system where I had the logo and tag line on the left side with the expressive type becoming dominant on the right hand side.
